The Wodeyar dynasty ruled the Kingdom of Mysore from 1399 CE to 1950 CE. They were the feudatory under the Vijaynagar Empire, who took advantage of the weakness of the Vijaynagar Empire. The word Wodeyar; is derived from the Kannada word that means ‘Lord’ or ‘Lordship’.
Krishnaraja Wodeyar III is also known as Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, ruled this kingdom for almost 27years from 1799 CE until 1868 CE. He is best known for his contribution to different arts and music during his reign.
This copper 5 cash was issued by King Krishnaraja Wodeyar III during his rule in the Vijaynagar Empire. The weight of this coin is around 2.23g and it was issued from the mint Mahisur. The obverse of this coin depicts ‘Lion facing towards left’ with the date 1840 written below. The reverse of this coin depicts ‘Persian legend’.
