Half Eagles in Spotlight at the 4th Auction of the Pogue Family Coin Collection
2016-06-03 Fri
In the Pogue IV sale that was conducted in New York City by Stack’s-Bowers, 1821 half eagles amongst others were the star coins. Classic Head half eagles got a better response than the Capped Head half eagles. The Naftzger-Pogue 1821 half eagle that will be sold at the auction is graded as “MS-66+” by PCGS and is approved by CAC. The coin reflects light brilliantly because of the vertical lines caused by the mint. Even though there are some marks and scratches, the coin was graded highly.
The coin is lighter in colour than other similar half eagles and quarter eagles that were issued around the same time. The sheen on the coin is evidently special. Only 25 such coins are known to exist today and it is also a fine example to represent the entire sub-type dating from 1813 to 1829. The coin is priced at $700,000. This Pogue 1821 is not only superior to that of 1827 but is also rarer. In January 2014, a MS-63+ 1821 half eagle was auctioned for $540,500 which is why the estimate of $350,000 to $450,000 for the current coin on sale is a bit confusing.
This could be because some collectors like crusty and dusty, never dipped coins that have more toning and are less dynamic than the Naftzger-Pogue 1821. Personal preferences mostly define the estimate pricing.
