Ranjit Singh’s Nanakshahi Couplet Silver Rupee

The Sikh empire was founded by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the year 1799 CE with the capture of Lahore, the capture of Lahore was a turning point for the Sikh Empire. The downfall of the Mughal Empire begins with the death of Aurangzeb in the year 1707 CE. It was a time when Sikh Empire started taking its shape. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, by this conquest, united the whole Punjab into one Kingdom. Throughout history, the Sikh Empire fought with the various kingdoms like the Durrani Empire of Afghanistan and the British India Kingdom.

This silver rupee of Nanakshahi Couplet type was issued by Ranjit Singh during his rule in the Sikh Empire. The weight of this silver rupee is around 11.12g and, issued from the mint Amritsar. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Sikka Zad Bar Har Do Alam Fazl Sachcah Sahib Ast Fath Tegh-I-Guru Gobind Singh Shah Nanak Wahib Ast’. The reverse side of this coin inscribed as ‘Sana VS date; Julus Maimanat Bakht Akal Takht; Zarb Sri Amritsar Jiyo.; branches with berries over the Persian alphabet 'Ta'.
