‘Sports’ is no more a man’s hub. Women in sports are also shining in the skies of glory. India also is not behind. Several Indian women have participated in the Olympics in the past. Among them, the first Indian woman to ever win an Olympic medal was Karnam Malleshwari.
Before 19th September 2000, Karnam Malleshwari was passed off as another nondescript weightlifter. After September 19, she became a household name. She won a bronze medal in weightlifting at the Sydney Olympics. With that, she became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.
Prior to the Olympic Games, Malleshwari won many medals in Asian Games, Asian Championships and World Championships. It was only after the Olympic game she got the attention of the world. She was felicitated with honorary awards such as Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Padma Shri.
India Post issued a Rs. 15 commemorative stamps on XXVII OLYMPICS which depicts a female weight lifter in the competition.
