C. Subramania Bharati was a famous Indian Independent Activist and social reformer; he was also a Tamil writer, Journalist, and Poet. Subramania Bharati is popularly known as ‘Mahakavi Bharati’ has he pioneered modern Tamil poetry. He was born Ettaiyapuram, Madras Presidency on 11th December 1921.He worked for several newspapers and later on joined Swadesamitran, the exposure to political affairs led to his involvement in the extremist wing of the Indian National Congress. Due to this, he had to flee to Pondicherry and lived there from 1910 to 1919. At the time of his exile, his essays and poetry of nationalism became quite famous and successful.
He returned to India in 1919 and later on joined Swadesamitran again after his brief imprisonment. on 12th September 1921, Subramania was killed by a temple elephant. To commemorate this great personality, India Post issued a commemorative stamp in 1960.
