Al- Masur was the second Caliph of the Abbasid Dynasty reigning from 754 to 775 AD. Regarded as the real founder of the Abbasid Caliphate, Al Murmansk established the capital city at Baghdad.

He is also known for founding the round city of Madinat Salam which was to become the core of imperial Baghdad. He was the brother of Al Saffah (first Caliph of Abbasid dynasty) and the father of next ruler Al-Mahdi.

During the reign, he issued gold Dinar and silver Dirham. These coins were issued from various mints such as Madinat Salam (Baghdad), Al Abbasiya, Al Hashimiya, Arminiya, Arran, Ifriqiya, Istakhr, and Sunday Sabur.

Represented above is a silver Dirham issued during his reign from Al Kufa mint. The obverse of this coin depicted the Kalima within a field and legend ‘Bismillah Zarb Haza-al-Dirham Bil Kufah Sanah’ depicted within a margin. The reverse of a coin also bore the Arabic inscription.
