2020-06-20 Sat
Australia Post issued four stamps on June 9 featuring the art of the Western Desert. The Western Desert includes most of the interior of Western Australia, northern South Australia and the southwest corner of the Northern Territory. The Aboriginal communities scattered throughout this area are among Australia’s most prolific art producers.” The Australian Dollar 2.20 stamp reproduces Kangaroo Dreaming, a 1971 painting by Walter Tjampitjinpa, and part of the artists’ cooperative at Papunya Tula, Northern Territory.
Kangaroo Dreaming artwork depicts a mob of kangaroo's traveling through the country. The dotted vertical lines illustrated represent rain. The kangaroo is an important totem species for Aboriginal people of Central Australia, which involves Dreaming stories and ceremonies.
