It’s June 19 and it’s Laguna Day!

The City of Santa Rosa is among the other cities and municipalities celebrating today’s very special and momentous occasion. Laguna Day is celebrated every 19th of June in honor of Dr. Jose Rizal’s birth anniversary, alongside the fact that the province was his birthplace.

Jose Rizal was a Filipino nationalist and polymath during the tail end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He is tagged as the national hero (pambansang Bayani) of the Filipino people. An ophthalmologist by profession, Rizal became a writer and a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which advocated political reforms for the colony under Spain. He was executed by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion after the Philippine Revolution

The Philippines issued a 2 Piso banknote in the year 1981. The banknote depicts the portrait of Jose Rizal and Seal of the Papal Visit of John Paul II to the Philippines. The reverse depicts the Declaration of Independence on 12 June 1898.
