Otto I traditionally known as Otto the Great was German king from 936 and Holy Roman Emperor from 962 until his death on 7th May 973. He was the oldest son of Henry I the Fowler and Matilda. His reign is generally considered to be the true beginning of the Holy Roman Empire. He Consolidated the German Reich by his suppression of rebellious vassals and his decisive victory over the Hungarians. He continued his father's work of unifying all German tribes into a single kingdom and greatly expanded the king's powers at the expense of the aristocracy.
Otto-I was selected as the main motif for a high-value commemorative coin, the 100 Euro Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire commemorative coin, issued in 2008 by the Austrian Mint. The obverse shows the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire. The reverse shows Emperor Otto I with Old St. Peter's Basilica in Rome in the background, where his coronation took place.
