Edward the Confessor became King of England Edward, byname Saint Edward the Confessor was among the last Anglo Saxon Kings of England reigning from 1042 to 1066. He is often portrayed as a listless, ineffectual monarch overshadowed by powerful nobles.

Edward was the son of Ethelred the Unready and Emma of Normandy. He was crowned at the cathedral of Winchester, the royal seat of the West Saxons, on 3 April 1043. Edward preserved much of the dignity of the crown and managed to keep the kingdom united during his reign of 24 years.
