The hryvnia is the national currency of Ukraine which has been the national currency of Ukraine since 2 September 1996. A currency called hryvnia was used in Kievan Rus - a loose federation of East Slavic and Finnic peoples in Europe. After the Ukrainian National Republic declared independence from the Russian Empire, the name of the new Ukrainian currency became “hryvnia”.

The word “hryvnia” originates from the word “grivna” - a neck decoration shaped like a smooth or twisted hoop made of gold or silver, which was also used as a monetary unit in Kievan Rus. In 1996, the first series of hryvnia banknotes was introduced into circulation by the National Bank of Ukraine. They were dated 1992 and were in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 hryvnias.

The above-shown banknote is 1 Hryvnia banknote issued in the year 2006. The banknote is a part of the current circulating banknotes and has a beautiful and vibrant combination of blue and yellow. This1 hryvnia from Ukraine features the 10th Century Grand Prince of Kyiv, Vladimir I Great. On the backside of the 1 UAH bill is a view on Vladimir I’s Fortress Wall in the old town of Kyiv.
