Chowhans of Ranthambhor

Chowhans of Ranthambhor is also known as Chahamanas of Ranastambhapura, was the Indian dynasty that ruled during the 13th century. They belong to the Chahamana (Chauhan) clan of the Rajputs, they ruled in the region of Ranastambhapura (Ranthambhor); in the present-day Rajasthan. They were the vassal of Delhi Sultanate and later as Sovereign.The Chowhans of Ranthambhor was founded by Govindraja, a member of the Shakambhari Chahamana family (also known as the Chauhans of Ajmer). When Prithviraj III, father of Shakambhari Chahamana family was defeated and was killed in the battle with the Ghurids in the year 1192 CE, they agreed to be the vessel of Ghurids. The Delhi Sultan Muhammad of Ghor appointed Govindraja as his vessel at Ajmer. However; Prithviraj III brother Hari-raja dethroned him and himself became the ruler of Ajmer. Govinda then established a new kingdom with its capital at Ranastambhapura (modern Ranthambhor).
