Rukmini Devi Arundale, an Indian theosophist, a reputed dancer and choreographer of Bharatnatyam was born on 29th February 1904. She is best known for her visionary work in the fields of dance, culture, and education.

She revived the Indian classical dance form of Bharatnatyam to its original 'sadhir' style, prevalent amongst the temple dancers, Devadasis, she also worked for the re-establishment of traditional Indian arts and crafts. Keenly interested in animal rights and welfare, she was associated with various humanitarian organizations.

In 1936, she along with her husband established the Kalakshetra Academy. The foundation aimed to preserve and popularize Bharatnatyam and other Indian traditions as well as to spread the ideals of theosophy. She served two stints as a member of the Rajya Sabha during the 1950s. She was the first Indian woman to be nominated in Rajya Sabha.

Rukmini Devi features in India Today's list of '100 People Who Shaped India'. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1967. In 1987, India Post issued a 60 Paise commemorative stamp and 2009 a definitive stamp of INR 5 in honor of this legendary Indian artist.
