2020-02-21 Fri
Ireland and Croatia have recently released a joint stamp issue to commemorate the national designation of Galway and Rijeka as European Capitals of Culture 2020.Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture is the largest and most complex cultural festival ever held on the island of Ireland. This year-long event will run from February 1st, 2020 to January 31st, 2021 to coincide with the ancient Celtic calendar.
More than 1900 events across 154 projects, 170 partnerships and collaborations with local, national, European and international artists and cultural organizations from over 30 different countries make up the program of events.
Galway City will form a central hub for the festival but events will be held in the villages, towns, and islands off the Galway coast and will be based around the four fire seasons of Ireland’s ancient Celtic calendar, Imbolc, Bealtaine, Lughnasa, and Samhain.
The Galway 2020 stamp features well-loved symbols of Galway's life and culture. The Croatian stamp shows features associated with Rijeka, a historic port city known as the gateway to Croatia’s islands.
