Sasanka: The King of Gauda

King Sasanka also is known as Shashanka or Sasanka-Deva was the first independent king of a unified polity in the Bengal region. He is considered as the founder of the Gauda Kingdom and also the first to have its political entity over Bengal. He considered one of the major figures in the history of Bengal. King Sasanka reigned during 7th Century CE and he also ruled some of the historical places during his rule between 600 CE and 636CE.This Abhishekha type base gold dinar which weighs around 8.94 was issued by king Sasanka during his reign. The obverse of this coin depicts Shiva nimbate, seated facing right reclining on the recumbent bull to left, with the moon. The reverse side of this coin depicts Abhisheka Lakshmi nimbate, holding a lotus seated cross-legged on a lotus with Brahmi legend Sri Shashanka.
