2020-02-04 Tue
This half dollar was issued by the United States of America on 31st March 1995 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the protection of Civil War battlefields. The Civil War of America is considered one of the most important events in the history of the United States of America. Between 1861 and 1865 many battles were fought across the continent, from Vermont to the New Mexico Territory, and beyond. This four-year struggle between north and south had changed the role of the women in society. The origin of the war was very complex; some of the issues were the issue of slavery and the interpretations of the Constitution and the rules, rights, and qualifications that it embodied.
The surcharges which were collected from the sales of this coin were received by Civil War Battlefield Foundation; these collections were used for the preservation of historically significant Civil War battlefields.
The obverse of this coin depicts a civil war drummer boy; the left side of the drummer boy is inscribed with the designer initial ‘DT’ and with the initials of the engraver as ‘TJF’ which stands for T. James Ferrell. The right of the drummer boy is inscribed with the mint mark ‘S’ which stands for ‘San Francisco’. The reverse side of the coin depicts the battlefield scene.
