The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is an agency of the Government of India, charged with the military's research and development. It was established in 1958 by amalgamating Defence Science Organisation and some of the technical development establishments.This organization was start with a vision to make India prosperous by establishing world-class science and technology. DRDO is working in various areas of military technology which include aeronautics, armaments, combat vehicles, electronics, instrumentation engineering systems, missiles, materials, naval systems, advanced computing, simulation and life sciences.
DRDO dedicatedly works towards enhancing self-reliance in Defence Systems and undertakes design & development leading to production of world class weapon systems. Today on 27th January 1996, DRDO successfully first test-fired it’s indigenously developed surface-to-surface missile, Prithvi-II.
Prithvi II is as Indian origin missile manufactured by DRDO and Bharat Dynamics Limited. The single-stage liquid-fuelled missile can carry a payload of around 500kg (1,100 lb), but with an extended range of 250 km (160 mi). It was developed with the Indian Air Force being the primary user. This variant has been inducted into the army as well. In a test, the missile was launched with an extended range of 350 km (220 mi) and had improved navigation due to an inertial navigation system. The missile features measures to deceive anti-ballistic missiles.
