A tribute to Shivpujan Sahay

Shivpujan Sahay was a noted Hindi novelist, editor and prose writer, who served Hindi literature with distinction.Born on August 9, 1893, at Unwans, a village in Buxar District of Bihar, Sahay was a true Gandhian. He came from a middle-class family with some landed property. His childhood name was a ‘Bholanath’.
He was one of the great editors who edited 13 magazines and periodicals in the pre-independence and post-independence era. Some notables magazines that he gave shape include “Matwala”, “Madhuri”, and “Himalaya” which was a landmark in the history of Hindi journalism. He also edited the autobiography of Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Premchand’s “Rangbhoomi”.
A pioneer of Hindi literary journalism in India, Shivpujan Sahai wrote about 400 Short stories, 67 biographies, and over 150 literary articles. His novel ‘Dehati Dunia’ is acclaimed as the first regional novel in Hindi. Some of his other prominent publications were: Bhisma, Arjuna, Maa ke Sapoot, Adarsh Parichay, etc.
He was honored several times for his literary achievements and awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1960. He passed away on 21st January, 1963.
To honor him India Postal Department has issued a 200 Paise commemorative postage stamp in 1998.
