Death Anniversary of Swami Shraddhanand

Swami Shraddhanand was an Indian educationalist and Arya Samaj missionary. His life was a symbol of renunciation and penance and his field of action was timeless. A noble soul and fearless patriot, and one of the greatest sons of India died today on 23rd December, 1926.He was born on 22 February 1856 in the village of Talwan in the Jalandhar District of Punjab into a well known and well to do Khatri family. His school education began at Varanasi and ended at Lahore. He gave up his lucrative profession also when the call came from Swami Dayanand Saraswati to serve the Arya Samaj.
He played a key role in the Sangathan and the Shuddhi, a Hindu reform movement. On 23rd December 1926, he was assassinated. Upon his death, Gandhi moved a condolence motion at the Guwahati session of the Congress on 25 December 1926. To honor him India Postal Department has issued a 20 Paise commemorative postage stamp in 1970.
