Max Muller, a German-English philologist, and orientalist was born on 6th December 1823. He was the only son of a distinguished poet, Wilhelm Muller, some of whose poems were set to music by Franz Schubert.
He was one of the founders of the western academic field of Indian studies and the discipline of the study of religions. Mueller ushered in the renaissance of India’s culture and was its greatest interpreter to the western world.
Max Mueller did not only delve into India’s past but also took the liveliest interest in her political re-awakening. He regularly corresponded with prominent Indians who prepared the path for India’s freedom.
To honor him India Postal Department has issued a 1 Rupee commemorative stamp on July 15, 1974. The stamp is vertical and depicts the portrait of the personalities.
