Birth Anniversary of Nandalal Bose
2019-12-03 Tue
Born on 3 December 1882, to a middle-class Bengali family in Munger district of Bihar, Nandalal took an active interest in moulding wet clay and decorating Durga Puja pandals. Nandalal Bose was one of India's leading artists of the 20th century and was closely associated with the Bengal School. Bose was among the few who sought to revive Indian art by rooting it in Indian tradition, shunning the overarching Western academic approach to art that prevailed at the time. He trained under Abanindranath Tagore at the Calcutta School of Art in 1905.Nandalal’s contribution towards Indian art is immense, for which he was honored with Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India. Nandalal Bose created more than 7000 portrays during the course of his illustrious career. Today, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi houses most of those paintings. He was one of the leaders for the renaissance of art in India. When Rabindranath Tagore founded the Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan, he invited Nandalal to join in. Nandalal Bose served as the principal at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan between 1922 and 1951.
In 1976, the Archaeological Survey of India, Department of Culture, Government of India declared his works among the "nine artists" whose work, "not being antiquities", were to be henceforth considered "to be art treasures, having regard to their artistic and aesthetic value".
Nandalal Bose and his team were entrusted with the task of illustrating our original written manuscripts of our Indian Constitution! We at Mintage World pay a tribute to one of the pioneers of modern Indian art and a pivotal figure of contextual modernism, Nandalal Bose.
