The Pallava dynasty was one of South India from the 3rd Century to 9th Century CE. The Pallava dynasties which came in light the decline of the Satavahanas dynasty; to whom the Pallava dynasty had served as the feudatory.

The Pallavas were possibly a local tribe who established their authority in the Tondainadu or the land of creepers. They ruled the Southern part of the Indian subcontinent for almost 500 years. This dynasty was at its peak during the reign of King Mahendravarman I (571–630 CE) and Narasimhavarman I (630–668 CE). The reign of the Pallava dynasty was always in conflict with both Chalukyas of Badami in the north and with Chola and Pandya in Tamil Nadu in the south.

This dynasty is well known for the art and architecture; The shore temple built by them is one of the finest examples of their architecture. This temple is a UNESCO world heritage site in Mamallapuram.

This copper alloyed coin issued from Pallavas of Kanchipuram is attributed to Mahendravarman I. The obverse of this coin depicts Bull standing to right, legend Pakapitu. The reverse fo this coin depicts Large Sankha in the circle with a rayed border.
