Tribute to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule

Born in a poor peasant Family in 1827 Pune, Jotirao Phule rose up to inspire many people through his thought and deeds. Jotirao completed his early education from Scottish Mission School in 1847. The inspiration of the young Jyotiba was the life and legends of Shivaji Maharaj and George Washington, mainly their stories of heroism and love for their motherland. Other work like the thoughts of Thomas Paine in ‘Right of Man’ also motivated Jyotiba to teach masses about the system of equality and educationThese thoughts inspired him to devote his life to helping the downtrodden to break their shackles of bondage. In 1848, Phule started a school for untouchable and girl due to which he faced a lot of criticism and resistance. His deeds and social work gain him the title of Mahatma from the masses.
Jyotirao carried a movement against the Caste System, he founded Satya Shodhal Samaj in 1873. The axiom ‘Truth Alone Triumphs’ was followed by him throughout his life and reflected in his teaching. Today on November 28th in 1890 this great sole passed away.
In 1977, India Post issued a commemorative stamp in the personalities on stamp series to mark Jyotiba Phule ha the great activist and teacher of India.
