Birth Anniversary of Fredrick Banting

Sir Fredrick Banting was a Canadian physician who along with Charles Best and John Rickard Macleod first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of Insulin in 1922. Injections of insulin proved to be the first effective treatment for diabetes, a disease in which glucose accumulates in abnormally high quantities in the blood. In 1923 Banting and John Rickard Macleod received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their achievement.He was born on November 14, 1891, at Alliston, Ontario. After attended public high school he enrolled himself at Victoria College for General Arts program. Every year his birthday is celebrated as World Diabetes Day.
Banting received the Nobel Prize at age 32; through this, he became the youngest Nobel laureate in the area of Physiology/Medicine. In 1923 the Government of Canada granted Banting a lifetime annuity to continue his work. In 1934 he was knighted by King George V.
To honor him South Africa Postal Department has issued 50 Cent commemorative postage stamps in 1990.
