Colombia, officially the Republic of Colombia, is a sovereign state situated in the northwest of South America, with some of its territories in North America as well. The peso has been the currency of Colombia since 1810. In 1915, a new paper currency was introduced, the Peso Oro. Colombia's banknotes continued to be issued denominated in Peso Oro until 1993, when the word Oro was dropped.

Today we are looking at 10,000 Colombian Pesos banknote. A part of the withdrawn Colombian Peso banknotes series, these 10000 Colombian Peso banknotes were first issued in 1995. Later they were withdrawn from circulation in 2013.

The 10000 banknote features the portrait of Policarpa Salavarrieta, a seamstress and spy during the 19th century Spanish Reconquista of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, present day Colombia. Salavarrieta, also known as ‘La Pola’ is a Colombian national hero who is celebrated each year on The Day of the Colombian Woman.

Day of the Colombian Woman is celebrated every year on November 14. This observance was established by the Congress of the Republic of Colombia in 1967 to commemorate the death anniversary of Policarpa Salavarrieta, who was sentenced to execution by the firing squad.
