Alfonso II also known as Alfonso of Aragon was King of Naples from 1494 to 1495. He ruled with the title king of Naples and Jerusalem.Alfonso was born on 4th November 1448 in Naples to Ferdinand I of Naples and Isabella of Clermont. He was the cousin of Ferdinand II of Aragon, king of Aragon and the first co-ruler of a unified Spain.
As crown prince, Alfonso had participated in the brilliant Renaissance culture that surrounded his father’s court. He was a supporter of Renaissance poets and builders during his tenure as the heir to the throne of Naples.
Depicted here is a gold Ducat issued under his reign. The obverse of a coin depicts the crowned bust of king facing right. On the other hand, the reverse of a coin engraved crowned shield.
