World Animal Day
2019-10-04 Fri
World Animal Day is celebrated every year on October 4 to raise the status of animals in our society. It is done by encouraging individuals, animal welfare organizations, community groups, youth and children’s clubs, and businesses to organize events in celebration of World Animal Day.World Animal Day was first mentioned in the year 1931. It was started off as a way to highlight the plight of endangered species. The idea of celebrating World Animal Day was first propagated by German author and animal protection activist Heinrich Zimmermann.
Zimmerman wanted the day to be observed on Oct. 4 to align it with the feast of St Francis of Assisi, who is considered to be the Patron Saint of Ecology, including animals. The first World Animal Day took place on 24th March 1925 which was attended by more than 5,000 people.
On 4th October 2001, Slovenia Post issued a stamp with the denomination of 107 - Slovenian tolar. The stamp features a sad looking cat and fingerprint. The fingerprint, perhaps, symbolizes the effect human activity has on animals. The stamp is inscribed with the name of the country at the top and the denomination at the bottom.
