Silver Denarius of Vitellius

Vitellius ruled the Roman Empire for a short period in the year 69 AD. He was the first to add the honorific cognomen Germanicus to his name instead of Caesar upon his accession.He was born on 24th September, 15 AD to the Lucius Vitellius Veteris and his wife Sextilia. His claim to the throne was soon challenged by legions stationed in the eastern provinces, who proclaimed their commander Vespasian emperor instead.
Depicted here is a Denarius minted in 69 AD during the year of the Four Emperors. The obverse of a coin engraved the bust of emperor facing left. The reverse of coin features victory seated left holding patera and palm branch.
