2019-09-23 Mon

Teachers of Brunei annually accept congratulations on Teachers' Day on September 23. This holiday was established in Brunei to commemorate the birth of the ruler Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, who was the 28th ruler of Brunei and was born on September 23, 1914.

Omar Ali Saifuddien III is often called the Architect of Modern Brunei for paying importance to the education of his subjects. He introduced a number of reforms that guaranteed the citizens nominal fees for attending schools thus making education in Brunei accessible even to the poorest people. He also offered religious scholarships to students with the potential to continue their higher education overseas.

Omar Ali Saifuddien III died in 1986 and he was succeeded by his eldest son Hassanal Bolkiah. He followed father's policy and even expanded it further. He founded and built a number of institutions and provided scholarships for study in Brunei and abroad. The annual Teacher's Day is among the platforms to celebrate and appreciate the role and sacrifices of teachers in creating an excellently educated society in aspects of knowledge, skills, and religion.

Various events and activities are held on Teachers' Day. Teachers are presented with the Guru Berjasa, Teachers Day and Excellent Teacher awards in recognition of their excellent service. Festive events may be postponed to another day due to the fasting.
