Dr. Vishnuvardhan, the legendary Kannada film actor of Indian cinema was born on 18th September 1950. He was widely remembered as ‘The Phoenix of Indian Cinema’.
Born as Sampath Kumar, but he was known by his screen name ‘Vishnuvardhan’. His father, H.L. Narayan Rao was an artist, music composer and a screenwriter who was known for his collection of musical instruments.
He made his first debut with an appearance in the film Vamsha Vriksha in 1927. The same year he played the lead role in Puttanna Kanagal's Naagarahaavu, and was recognized as 'The Angry Young Man of Kannada Cinema'. Later, He appeared in over 220 films in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam. br>
In recognition of his service to Indian Cinema, he was honor with several awards. Vishnuvardhan was awarded Filmfare South Lifetime achievement award in 2002 for his contribution to Kannada film Industry. He has also appeared on a commemorative postage stamp issued by India Postal Department in 2013.
