Birth Anniversary of Uttam Kumar

The iconic Actor of Bengali cinema, Uttam Kumar was born on 3rd September 1926. He is widely regarded as one of the most popular and beloved actors of India and known by the honorific Mahanayak.

Through his career, he earned commercial as well as a critical success, and he remains a cultural icon. Uttam Kumar was the first recipient from Bengali cinema, who was honoured at the 15th National Film Awards in 1967 for his performance in Anthony Firingee and Chiriyakhana. He is the only actor who won this award for two different films in the same year.

Uttam made his on-screen debut with the film Drishtidan, followed by Kamona and Maryada. Some of his most memorable roles came in the films Kaar Paape, Sharey Chuattor, Bakul, Kalyani, Debatra, Saheb Bibi Golam, Shikar and Saptapadi. He dominated the Bengali Film Industry for three decades, working with auteurs such as Satyajit Ray, Nirmal Dey, Niren Lahiri and more.

To honour him, India Postal Department has issued a commemorative postage stamp of denomination 5 Rupees in 2009.
