It is situated in Hyderabad city and was built in 1951. The Salar Jung is the third largest of India’s museums, housing many of India’s most important treasures.

It is one of the single largest one-man collections of the world! That’s Wow...The art objects were collected by the late Nawab Mir Yusuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III, who was the Prime Minister to Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan, Nizam VII, the ruler of Hyderabad, hence the name, Salarjung Museum.

The Museum has a collection from sculptures to paintings, carvings, manuscripts, ceramics, textiles, carpets, metalwork, clocks, and furniture from all over the world. It has around 1.1 million objects in their collection. So, is it possible to view this Museum in a day? No, we don’t think so.

The Museum is active with regular exhibitions, workshops, Seminars and lectures.

The Museum was opened to the public on 16th December 1951 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

On 27th July 1978 the India Post Government issued a commemorative stamp of INR2 in the name of Salar Jung Museum. The stamp portrays specimens from the museum’s collection, a dagger and knife.
