Siegel to Auction Interesting Philatelic Material from US and the Confederate States

11 Jul 2019  Thu

From 23rd to 25th July, Robert A. Siegel is going to auction interesting philatelic material issued by the US and the Confederate States. One of the highlights is a strip of three 10¢ black stamps featuring George Washington with distinct red grid cancels. It has large margins on the left and is in at the bottom. The item will be offered along with a 2007 Philatelic Foundation certificate. It has an officially listed market value of $10,000. However, the listing suggests that it’s difficult to value the stamp accurately.

Another offering to look out for is a 2¢ carmine stamp featuring George Washington that was issued in 1916. The item belongs to Depew estate and is type II horizontal coil as a used joint line pair. It has a light duplex cancel. Experts believe that only 12 known examples of this combination exist today. One is a strip of three and another in a strip of five. The offered item has a listed market value of $20,000 but the listing also mentions that it’s difficult to evaluate the item. The top-right corner of the right stamp has a little corner crease.
