Kentucky is one of the states of the United States of America; it is located in the east south-central region of the United States. State Kentucky is one of four U.S. states constituted as a commonwealth (the others being Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts). State Kentucky is also known as the "Bluegrass State", this nickname is based on the bluegrass found in many of its pastures due to the fertile soil. Kentucky is well known for horse racing, bourbon distilleries, moonshine, coal, the "My Old Kentucky Home" historic state park, automobile manufacturing, tobacco, bluegrass music, college basketball, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

This quarter dollar was issued by the United States of America in the year 2001 with the theme of Kentucky State. This quarter dollar is the 15th coin issued in 50 State Quarters Program and 5th coin release in the year 2001. The reverse of this coin depicts stately mansion, Federal Hill and a thoroughbred racehorse positioned behind a fence in the foreground.
