State Bhopal was established in the year 1724 CE by the Afghan Sardar Dost Mohammad Khan, a commander in Mughal army. He took advantage of the breakdown of the Mughal Empire and seizes Mangalgarh and Berasia. Later he also helped Gond Queen Kamalapati by executing her husband's assassins and restoring the little Gond kingdom back to her.
After the death of last Gond queen, he took over the Gond kingdom and established his capital 10 km away from Bhopal at Jagdishpur. He named his capital Islamnagar, meaning the city of Islam.
Bhopal was a tributary state during the 18th Century, it was also ruled by the British government from 1818 CE to 1947 CE and an Indian state from 1949 to 1956. Its capital was the Bhopal city.
