The United States Postal Service pays tribute to “America’s last battleship” USS Missouri by issuing a nondenominated forever stamp on 11th June.
The issue date marks the 75th anniversary of Missouri’s commissioning on June 11, 1944. USS Missouri was the last battleship and the third ship of the United States Navy to be named after the U.S. state of Missouri.
Missouri was ordered in 1940 and commissioned in June 1944. Missouri was the last battleship commissioned by the United States and is best remembered as the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan which ended World War II.
Missouri received a total of 11 battle stars for service in World War II, Korea, and the Persian Gulf, and was finally decommissioned on 31 March 1992 after serving a total of 17 years of active service.
Its last honour comes from the US Postal Service. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the ship, a non-denominated stamp was issued on 11th June 2019. The stamp depicts a digital illustration of the ship against the cloudy and sea background.
