Birth Anniversary of the Successor of Kirloskar Group

The day of 28th May marks an anniversary of the successor of the biggest engineering conglomerates. Shantanurao Laxmanrao Kirloskar also known as S. L. Kirloskar was born on 28 May 1903.

S. L. Kirloskar as an Indian businessman and was instrumental in the rapid growth of the Kirloskar Group which was founded by his father Laxmanrao Kirloskar. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.

Kirloskar was a global thinker and an enterprising person who, with immense courage and confidence, brought about the rapid growth to the Kirloskar Group. He not only established Kirloskar Electric Company and Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited at Bangalore and Pune, respectively but also he is credited with developing the manufacture of diesel engine indigenously as an import substitute after India attained independence.

He was also amongst the first Indians to graduate from MIT. Shantanurao Kirloskar was awarded Padma Bhushan in the year 1965 for his contribution to trade and industry. On 26 February 2003, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the then Prime Minister of India, released a commemorative postage stamp marking Kirloskar's 100th anniversary with the denomination of Rs.5.
