Pandit Kumar Gandharva One of the most famous classical musicians in India was born on 8th April 1924. Born as Shivaputra Siddharamayya Komkali, he received the title of Kumar Gandharva for his extraordinary talent in Music.The story of his life goes like this. Born in a simple family of Dharwad, Karnataka, Kumar Gandharva had an inclination towards Indian Classical Music. Even though he was inflicted with Tuberculosis and had only one functioning lung, he was determined to make his mark.
The unique thing about him is that he was not tied down to the “Gharana” system. He developed his own style of singing and that is what took him to the heights he has reached in his lifetime. His style of singing included many dramatic gestures and smiles, which was thoroughly enjoyed by his audience.
Pandit Kumar Gandharva was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1977. Besides, Government of India issued a Rs5.00 stamp paying commendation to him. A singing portrait of Kumar Gandharva is featured on this stamp.
