One of the finest actors and singers in the history of Kannada cinema, Singanalluru Puttaswamy Mutturaju was born on 24th April 1929. He is considered a cultural icon and holds a matinée idol status in the Kannada Diaspora.

Also known by his stage name ‘Rajkumar’ was born in Gajanur, in the erstwhile Madras Presidency. He entered the film industry after his long stint as a dramatist. He is best known for his incredible performance in films such as Bhakta Kanakadasa, Ranadheera Kanteerava, Satya Harishchandra, Immadi Pulikeshi, Sri Krishnadevaraya, Bhakta Kumbara, Mayura, Babruvahana and Bhakta Prahlada.

Rajkumar was also an accomplished playback singer. For his performance, he was awarded the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. He acted in 206 movies, excluding his guest appearances. He made his last appearance in the film ‘Shabdavedhi’. br>
Rajkumar was honored with several prestigious awards such as Padma Bhushan in 1983, Karnataka Ratna in 1992, and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1995. In his memory, India Postal Department has issued 500 Paise (5 Rupee) commemorative postage stamps in 2009.
