One of India’s most respected film personalities, Baldev Raj Chopra (also known as BR Chopra) was born today on 22nd April 1914. He has been an architect of what is now known as the golden era of the Bollywood industry.

After graduating, he did his M.A. degree in English Literature from Lahore University. He started his career in 1944 as a film journalist with Cine Herald. In 1955 he started his own production company, B.R.Films. His first movie for this production house was Ek hi Raasta which was highly successful.

BR Chopra's career spanning five decades, he gave Bollywood its most glorious era. He is best known for making Hindi films like Naya Daur, Sadhna, Kanoon, Gumrah, Humraaz, Awam and the TV series, Mahabharata in the late 1980s.

He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1998. Besides this, he was honored with Padma Bhushan in 2001. India Postal Department has issued 500 Paise (5 Rupee) commemorative postage stamps in 2013.
