Pandit Ravi Shankar was born on 7th April 1920. It’s his 96th Birth Anniversary. Today is the 96th Birth Anniversary of the gem in the crown of Indian Classical music. His compositions show a unique fusion of Indian and Western Style.Born in the Bengali family of Varanasi, Pandit Ravi Shankar, along with his brother, spent his youth in Europe. Where he was exposed to the dances and music of both Indian and Western cultures at the same time. He returned to India and learned Sitar under the Tutorship of Ustad Allauddin Khan. Pandit Ravi Shankar, then, set to pursue his professional career.
He worked as a music director of All India Radio, New Delhi. He was also the music composer of Satyajit Ray's Apu trilogy and was a music director for several Hindi movies like Godaan and Anuradha. His work “Saare Jahan Se Achcha”, even today, is his most famous composition.
He was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna. The Government of India issued a Commemorative stamp worth Rs25.00 paying tribute to his life and his music. The stamp depicts him playing Sitar.
