Tribute to Nanda Lal Bose

Today on 16th April in 1966, he was the one who pioneered the modern Indian art and a key figure of Contextual modernism. He is also addressed as the leading artist of the 20th century. Nanda Lal was born on 3rd December 1882, he was born in a middle-class Bengali family of Kharagpur, in, Munger district of Bihar state. He was one of the greatest painters and was closely associated with the Bengal School. In 1910-11 he joined the team of Lady Herringham for assisted in making copies of Ajanta paintings.

Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru asked him to design the emblems of prestigious government awards, such as Bharat Ratna and Padma Shri. Besides this, Nandalal Bose along with his disciple Rammanohar took up the historic task of beautifying/decorating the original manuscript of the Constitution of India.

Nandalal received several prestigious awards and honor including Padma Vibhushan and Fellow Lalit Kala Akademi. India Post has issued special commemorative stamp that was released on 5th December 1983 for his notable contributions to Indian art.
