500th Death Anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci

San Marino released a €2 coin in Uncirculated condition to honour the great artist Leonardo da Vinci on his 500th death anniversary. Designed by Uliana Pernazza, the obverse side depicts the face of the kneeling angel supporting the garment of Jesus. The illustration is a part of Leonardo’s masterpiece named Baptism of Christ. The original painting was completed in 1475 in the studio of Andrea del Verrocchio, who was a famous Italian Renaissance painter. Credited to both Andrea and Leonardo, the painting is currently showcased at Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Detailing of the angel’s pose, drapery of the blue mantle, river and features of Christ are extraordinary. The 8.5 grams coin has a diameter of 25.75 millimetres and a mintage limit of 54,150 pieces. It can be purchased for €16.50.Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest artists from the Renaissance period. He promoted figurative arts and the history of thought and science. He excelled in various fields such as painting, sculpting, architecture, science, engineering, literature, anatomy and invention.
