Today on this in 1907, Mahadevi Varma, one of the greatest luminaries of modern Hindi literature was born. She is best known as an outstanding Hindi poet, freedom fighter, woman’s activist and educationist from India. Mahadevi Verma was born in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. Married at an early age, she started her education practically thereafter and eventually took her M.A. in Sanskrit.

Mahadevi Varma is one of the four major Hindi poets of the Chhayavaadi School of Hindi Literature. She was the Principal, and then the Vice-Chancellor of Prayag Mahila Vidyapeeth, a woman’s residential college in Allahabad.

Mahadevi was widely recognized as ‘Modern Meera’ for her stirring works with themes of Love. She was honored with various prestigious Awards such as Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, Jnanpeeth Award, and Padma Vibhushan. To honor her India Post has issued 200 Paise (2 Rupee) commemorative postage stamp in 1991.
