2019-03-18 Mon

The backbone of India’s Defence production, Indian Ordnance Factories commenced on today, on 18th March 1802. They are known as the force behind armed forces.

The IOFs play a vital role in the production, testing, logistics, research, development, and marketing of a comprehensive product range in the area of land, sea and air systems. They form an integrated base for indigenous production of defense hardware and equipment.

Every year 18th March is celebrated as The Ordnance Factories Day to mark the occasion of the first production. The Day is regarded as an event to confirm the dedication of the Ordnance Board to the nation, by means of ensuring high-quality products for the armed forces of India. This day is observed by showcasing the major weapons manufactured in the factories.

A commemorative postage stamp was issued on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Ordnance Factories Board. The 4 Rupee stamp design shows Tank Ajeya, with a gun carriage from the olden days in the background.
