Ukraine has plans to soon introduce paper money made of, guess what? Flax! Yes, officials state that they have been considering the use domestic raw materials to produce banknotes in addition to cotton fibre, since a very long time. Flax is much cheaper than imported cotton fibre, which will drastically reduce production costs. Paper and flax will be used to manufacture hryvnia banknotes as per official reports.

The first batch of these notes has already been printed in the country’s western Zhytomyr region. Experts also believe that natural properties of flax fibres significantly exceed the mechanical strength of cotton fibres, ensuring a longer wear resistance of paper.
