The most important Sitar player of his generation, Ustad Vilayat Khan has a tremendous contribution in the field of music. The greatest of Musicians, an epoch maker, and a visionary breathed his last on 13th March 2004. Vilayat Khan was born on 28th August 1928 in Gouripur, Mymensingh in the East Bengal during British Raj (Present in Bangladesh).He got music lessons from Ustad Enayet Khan, Ustad Wahid Khan, his maternal grandfather Bande Hussain Khan, maternal uncle Zinda Hussain Khan.
His father Enayat Khan was recognized as a leading Sitar and Surbahar player of his time. Vilayat Khan recorded his first 78-RPM disc at the age of 8 and gave his last concert in 2004 at the age of 75. Khan Sahab is the only Sitar player to have the title ‘Aftaab-E-Sitar’ (Sun of Sitar) and ‘Bharat Sitar Samrat’ (Emperor of Sitar).
His style is very well known and is being remembered with great respect. To honor this legendary India post has issued 500 Paisa commemorative stamps in 2014.
