Vijay Hazare, a former Indian cricketer and captain was born on today on 11th March 1915, in Sangli. He was one of eight children to a school teacher and was educated at the Presbyterian Mission Industrial School.
Vijay Hazare was the man who led India to its first Test win in 1951-52 against England. He captained India in 14 matches and represented India in 30 tests. Vijay Hazare with Jasu Patel was the first cricketers to be honored with the Padma Shri. Vijay Hazare Trophy also started after this legendary cricketer.
To commemorate him rare special cover was issued in 2011.
