First Wmen to Appear on Rs. 10 Coin of India is singer Dr. Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi.

Dr. Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi also known as Dr. M.S. Subbulakshmi, was a Carnatic vocalist born on 16/09/1916 in Madurai under Madaras Presidency. She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna. She is the first Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay award, often considered as Asia’s Noble Prize in 1974.

The Obverse of the coin depicts Ashoka Pillar flanked by Lettering Bharat INDIA, Denomination Below with rupee symbol and the reverse depicts Bust of Dr. M.S.Subbulakshmi. Legend in Devnagari and English around “1916 – 2016 BIRTH CENTENARY OF DR.M.S.SUBBULAKSHMI” in roman and Devanagari.

Dr. Subbulakshmi is the First & Only Women to appear on the Indian 10 Rupees Bi-Metallic coin. She also appeared on the Women’s day Post card along with Mother Teresa, Indira Gandhi and others.
