Today, on this day in 1699, Maharaja Jai Singh-II crowned as King of Jaipur kingdom and sat on Amber throne.
Mahraja Sawai Jai Singh was born at Amber, the capital of Kachwahas. He became the ruler at the age of 11 after his father Maharaja Bishan Singh died.
He was the remarkable monarch of Jaipur, was a mathematician, an astronomer, and a town planner par excellence. He set up the famous observatories known as Jantar Mantars and built the city of Jaipur.
Depicted here is silver issued in the name of Muhammad Akbar II and Jai Singh II from Sawai Jaipur mint. The obverse of a coin depicted the legend ‘Sikka Mubarak Sahib-e-Kiran Muhammad Akbar Shah Badshah Gazi’. The reverse of a coin has legend ‘Zarb Sawai Jaipur Sanah 27 Julus Mainamat Manus’.
